Task 1 - Chosen Artwork
This design, titled "The Grand Boulevard", was developed from my initial idea of creating a calm public space within an urban environment. Since my artwork is purely drawing-based and does not include any text, I wanted it to resemble an art print, which led me to adopt the Art Deco visual style. The composition features a centrally placed building that acts as the main focal point, reflecting the symmetry and geometric structure commonly found in Art Deco design. The surrounding buildings and trees frame the scene, creating depth and guiding the viewer’s eye toward the centre.
For the colour scheme, I used a cool-toned palette of purples and blues to represent the evening sky. This cool background is contrasted with warm yellow lighting from the building and windows. This contrast not only draws attention to the focal point but also creates a sense of warmth and comfort within the scene. The human figures are simplified and stylised, reflecting the elegance and minimalism of Art Deco. Their repeated placement along the pathway creates a sense of rhythm and gentle movement. The balanced placement of the elements helps maintain a harmonious and visually stable composition.
To enhance the vintage Art Deco poster feel, I added a subtle grain texture to both the sky and the ground. Overall, the artwork is designed to capture a calm and refined moment in a city.
Reflection
Throughout this module, I have learnt about design principles and how to apply them. Previously, I did not pay much attention to these principles. When I looked at an artwork, I would simply think it looked good without analysing it in depth. However, through Task 1 and Task 2, I learnt how to observe and analyse an artwork more carefully instead of just looking at it visually. I also learnt how to apply the principles I observed to create my own artwork.
What I enjoyed the most was the process of developing my own idea and turning it into a final artwork. I personally like abstract collage art, and although I initially wanted to create a collage, I eventually chose to work in an Art Deco style. It was satisfying to see my idea develop from a simple sketch into a complete outcome. However, what I did not enjoy the most was the time-consuming process of drawing detailed elements, especially the human figures. Unlike trees and buildings, each human figure is unique, which required more time, patience, and effort, making the process quite tiring.
Through this module, I have learnt that I enjoy storytelling through visuals. I am now more interested in analysing artworks instead of just observing them on the surface. In my learning journey, I have become more confident in applying design principles rather than simply arranging elements based on what looks good.
In the future, I aspire to continue improving my design skills, explore more creative styles, and develop a unique visual style of my own.
