Task 3 : Development and Design
Instructions
Task 3
In this task, I will develop and refine one of my ideas from Task 2 into a final design. I will explore elements such as colour, composition, and layout, while applying design principles to improve the overall visual outcome. The aim is to transform my initial sketch into a more polished and complete design that clearly communicates its intended message.
Sketch
Among the three sketches I created in Task 2, I chose Sketch 1 to further develop into a complete artwork.
Before starting the final drawing, I created another sketch using reference photos so that I could trace the basic forms. I then made adjustments to the traced artwork to better fit my composition.
Next, I continued developing the illustration by adding each element layer by layer.
This was the first version of my artwork, and I felt that it was missing something. Therefore, I decided to add two more figures. I did not include as many figures as I had initially planned because drawing each figure takes a significant amount of time.
Finally, I added gradient colours and a grain texture to enhance the overall design and make it better match the Art Deco style.
Final Artwork - The Grand Boulevard

This design, titled "The Grand Boulevard", was developed from my initial idea of creating a calm public space within an urban environment. Since my artwork is purely drawing-based and does not include any text, I wanted it to resemble an art print, which led me to adopt the Art Deco visual style. The composition features a centrally placed building that acts as the main focal point, reflecting the symmetry and geometric structure commonly found in Art Deco design. The surrounding buildings and trees frame the scene, creating depth and guiding the viewer’s eye toward the centre.
For the colour scheme, I used a cool-toned palette of purples and blues to represent the evening sky. This cool background is contrasted with warm yellow lighting from the building and windows. This contrast not only draws attention to the focal point but also creates a sense of warmth and comfort within the scene. The human figures are simplified and stylised, reflecting the elegance and minimalism of Art Deco. Their repeated placement along the pathway creates a sense of rhythm and gentle movement. The balanced placement of the elements helps maintain a harmonious and visually stable composition.
To enhance the vintage Art Deco poster feel, I added a subtle grain texture to both the sky and the ground. Overall, the artwork is designed to capture a calm and refined moment in a city.
