Project Idea: RoomEats AR App

As I continue working on my project, I've made several small refinements to improve the functionality and layout. All of these refinements are aimed at enhancing the overall user experience.

Initially, I had planned to incorporate both marker-based and marker-less AR functionalities. The marker-based approach would trigger the image target to unlock the menu panel, while the marker-less functionality would scan a flat surface to display the 3D food.

However, Lecturer Razif recommended focusing on marker-based AR for a more seamless virtual environment, so I decided to streamline the project and stick with the marker-based approach. This decision also makes the project less complex and more manageable.

As a result, I've adjusted my plan so that the image target now serves two purposes:
1. Unlock the Menu
2. Display 3D Food

All the functional buttons are designed in Illustrator

I downloaded all the 3D food models from the Unity Asset Store and TurboSquid.

I attempted to create my own 3D food models, but due to my current skill level, I ended up focusing on creating plates for the food instead.

REFLECTIONS

The process of creating my AR app has been an incredible journey of learning, challenges, and accomplishments. Initially, I had envisioned a transparent background design with a sleek white panel in the center. However, due to technical limitations, I had to pivot and make the background non-transparent. This adjustment, while unplanned, turned out to be a valuable lesson in adaptability and problem-solving.

Another significant part of the project was working with 3D models. I sourced most of the 3D food models from the Unity Store and TurboSquid, as my own modeling skills were limited. Despite this, I took the opportunity to create the plates for the food, which allowed me to contribute creatively while working within my capabilities.

The technical challenges were equally rewarding. From implementing marker-based AR functionality to troubleshooting build and deployment issues in Xcode, every hurdle was a learning opportunity. One particularly fulfilling moment was successfully deploying the app to my iPhone and testing it in real-time. It was incredible to see my work come to life and function as intended.

While I’ve successfully completed the app, this project has made me realise the importance of thorough planning, iterative testing, and constant refinement. It also highlighted the need to remain flexible and open to alternative solutions when initial plans don't work out.

Overall, this project has been a significant milestone in my development journey. It has deepened my understanding of AR technology, Unity, and Xcode.
